Hawker Hurricane fly past will take place over Leighton Linslade Rotary May Day Fayre

Rotary Club of Leighton Linslade are delighted that , weather permitting, the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight have agreed for a Hawker Hurricane Fly past at this year May Day Fayre. The attendance of the Hurricane follows the very successful flypast by the world famous Spitfire at last years Queens Jubilee Fayre.

The Hawker Hurricane was the workhorse of the RAF during the dark days of the Battle of Britain which lasted from 10 July until 31 October 1940, with the heaviest fighting taking place between 8 August and 21 September. Despite the undoubted abilities of the “thoroughbred” Spitfire, it was the “workhorse” Hurricane that scored the higher number of RAF victories during this period, accounting for 55% of the 2,739 German losses, according to Fighter Command, compared with 42% by Spitfires. With the long history of the RAF in Leighton Buzzard it will be great to see a key defender of our freedom in the skies over the town once again.
