PSA test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. It’s a blood test that can help diagnose prostate problems, including prostate cancer.
A healthcare professional takes a blood sample from a vein in your arm The blood sample is sent to a lab for analysis
When the test might be recommended:
- If you have symptoms that could indicate prostate cancer, such as painful or frequent urination, blood in urine or semen, and pelvic and/or back pain
- If you’re over 50 years old, or 45 for higher risk groups
What the results mean:
- A raised PSA level may suggest you have a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer
- High levels may be a sign of a prostate condition, such as prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or prostatitis
